IGNITE #3 March 11th 2010 - Talk on Juggling

Postby brianoc15 » February 26th, 2010, 5:56 pm

Hey guys,

So theres this thing on in Trinity on the 3rd March. Its a bunch of talkers who have 5 minutes and 20 slides to talk about a subject they are passionate about. This one on the 3rd march has a few talkers on psychology, interface design, leprachauns, and.... JUGGLING!!!

They asked me to do a bit on juggling, so i'm putting together a talk for this event! weyhey!! So If anyone has any contributions I would gladly take them on board and try to put them into the slideshow. Any help would be appreciated, also if you wanna come along on the night and listen to the talk and others, please do i could use the support!! :D

So far i have not done much on it but my basic ideas are to do a 4 minute talk and 1 minute performance, probably of club juggling. Also I plan to talk about (in no particular order):

A little about me
Why juggling is great, including reference to the scientific study that proves juggling increases your brain mass, whoop!
Disciplines
Fire
Performance
Circus Workshops for schools and disadvantaged communities
Dublin Circus Project - Who we are, Where we are going with it
The community
Conventions

I'm still workin on stuff so we'll see how it develops over time. but if anyone wants to help out i could probably use a few people to listen in a watch as i rehearse close to the date so i get my timing right and all that.

Cheers for your time guys!

Brian

Sounds like you have a good plan. Another thing you might mention is math and Juggling, and how many jugglers are engineers etc...

Sawsome! There was a Mathsoc talk in Trinity last year with this crazy mathematician dude. Can't remember his name but I can get it for ya fairly easy if you want. He was sooo great. Talked all about the "maths" of juggling. He made it fun and interesting, from "bad" juggling to audience participation.

wow great responses guys,

maria: starts at 6.30, my bit will be on about 7.45, just after the intervel.

collison: thats a great link it looks like it has a fair bit of stuff in it, i cant get to it right now but i'll read it front back and inside out when i get the time :)

NateNateNate: i'll be puttin in bits of the challenge and rewardingness of juggling in the why juggling is great bit, also now that you mention it, the individual expression people find in their art form. thanks!

Hughperman: A talk on juggling would be silly without a complete history of war, and any and all material relating to chainsaws in their juggled form. you didnt even need mention it.

Stephen: good call, that link is pretty interesting, i'll put in a bit on history

this is all getting quite interesting... YAY!

Hang on your original post said 3rd March, but the title and website says 11th. I'm gonna go with the 11th then. Also Ian Robertson is a guy who works with my group in TCD!

I'll be there for def, cool.

Actually, could you give the talk while juggling away in a cascade? Then do some funky stuff for the demonstration? Maybe a bit difficult on the spot I guess :p

SO i did the talk and it went well :) whoop!

but! i did make a few mistakes, a few omissions and murmered sometimes so its not perfect, but overall i like how it turned out! oh i also somehow convinced myself i had 20 seconds per slide instead of 15 so had to delete 100 seconds of talk-time from my talk roughly 45 mins before i went on, hahahaha.

Thanks to everyone who suggested things to put in! :) The video is now online at

please check it out! you might learn something!

For future reference, I recommend about 2 minutes per slide! A slide should be a prompter for what you want to say. Typically for a 50 minute lecture I get through between 20-30 slides, with the higher end of the slides if I have a lot of similar graphs that I want to contrast.

I know of quite a few people who struggle to get through 15 slides in an hour!

All the recommendations are to allow a minimum of a minute per slide to avoid people being distracted by slide changes.

Overall, I enjoyed the talk though.... just a few pointers on the direction any updated version of the talk might take, especially as part of the DCP.

I believe a restriction of the IGNITE night is that slides are kept to 15 seconds per slide!

thats what makes it so EXPLOSIVE!!!! it was fairly high energy and buzzin around the place. i liked the format it kept you on your toes tho it did mean i missed a couple of points. makes it easier on the audience too.

tho yes if i am giving the talk again not under such time constraints i'll probably make it easier on myself, plus i'll be able to fit more info in :)
